Ocean Frog

Bawa Muhaiyaddeen told this version of sufi story. An oceanfrog comes to visit a ditchfrog, who is very proud of where he lives, a section of ditch two feet deep, four feet long, and three feet across. He jumps around demonstrating the elegant spaciousness of his place. “How do you like this?”  “Very fine,” says the oceanfrog. “What is it like where you live?” asks the ditchfrog; he has never seen or heard of the ocean. “I can’t really describe how it is where I live.  Someday I’ll take you there.”

I had asked Bawa what the difference was between my consciousness and his. “Someone who lives in the confines of mind and desire is like the ditchfrog. The oceanfrog swims in the ocean of grace. It is good for them to visit each other.”
